One of the most common questions we get from people considering Pilates for the first time: Should I start on the reformer or with mat?
The honest answer is that both are excellent. They share the same foundational principles — core engagement, breath, precision, and control — but the experience and accessibility differ in important ways. Here's how to think about it.
Mat Pilates is the original form of the practice, developed by Joseph Pilates himself. It requires no equipment — just your body and a mat. Classes focus on building strength and control through bodyweight movements: rolling exercises, leg circles, the hundred, the plank series, and dozens of variations that challenge every part of your core.
Mat Pilates is a good fit if:
The limitation of mat is that it requires more baseline body awareness. Without the feedback of the reformer, compensating with the wrong muscles is easier to do unnoticed.
The reformer is a spring-resistance machine that adds feedback, support, and variability that mat can't replicate. The carriage moves on rails, the springs create resistance (or assistance) depending on the exercise, and the foot bar and straps allow for a huge range of movement patterns.
Reformer Pilates is a good fit if:
Many people assume the reformer is advanced. In fact, it's often more beginner-friendly than mat — the spring support makes it easier to access the right muscles, which is exactly where good training starts.
We offer both, and we're firm believers that they complement each other. Most of our clients eventually practice both formats, using mat classes to build body awareness and reformer classes to develop strength and precision.
For complete beginners, we recommend starting with Foundations — either Reformer Foundations or Mat Foundations. Both are small-group classes designed to teach you the essentials before you step into a regular class format.
You can see the full breakdown of our class formats — including descriptions, formats, and pricing — on our Classes page.
If you're not sure where to start, start with what excites you. The best class is the one you'll actually show up for. Both formats will challenge you, change how you move, and give you something to build on for years.
